April Phillips is a recent local of Coffs Harbour. Previously residing in Melbourne, April seeks to bring some of her more favourable experiences to Coffs to provide a social atmosphere where local community members can come together to learn, create and socialize with others in their community.
What is MAKE SPACE?
MAKE SPACE is a new fashion hub for humanitarian refugees who have recently immigrated to the Coffs Harbour region. At this stage we have a focus on creating unique leather accessories. MAKE SPACE was created in response to the need for a meeting place to be creative and make items to sell. Places like this exist in Melbourne (the social studio) and Sydney (the social outfit).
What’s your backstory?
I am April Phillips, the founder of this project. I come from a background in Sculpture, and footwear design / leather consultancy. I am a formerly from Melbourne and now live in Coffs harbour.
Where are you up to now?
We have just begun our first 9 week classes of MAKE SPACE in the Coffs Harbour area. Additionally, Youth Directions and North Coast TAFE are currently partnered with this project.
What’s the vision?
To have a permanent MAKE SPACE hub, set up in Coffs Harbour CBD. This would be a meeting point between recent immigrants and the wider community. This space would be a place to make, be, and do. We aim to sell items made here as well as interstate…maybe even abroad!
What are you looking for from the public to get your project moving?
We are looking for assistance in finding a retail space within the Coffs CBD area that is suitable for our vision, somewhere local, open and inviting, and available from July 2014.
I am also looking for any in-kind support and services, or volunteers from individuals and organisations that can assist in getting Make Space underway.
Any donations of funds or materials would also be welcome, such as; tables, chairs, machinery, either to borrow or donated would be much appreciated.
