A question one of our members posed recently “As part of my business I’m looking at setting up some online training programs. As I’m a complete IT novice, I’m looking to pick the brain of someone who has knowledge of online training platforms.”

Kerry Grace from Evolve Network shared her experience and knowledge in this area as she has tried a few:

Self-managed platforms: Kajabi and Academy of Mine – you’d choose a self-managed platform if you (a) want to keep the student details and maintain control of your marketing / price, content etc.  Kajabi is very simple but I chose Academy of Mine in the end (it’s about $200 per month) because it incorporates marketing, analytics and student incentive systems.

and a few hosted ones: Udemy and  Use these if you only want to dip your toe in and want to have access to their audiences.  I’ve read that the amount you get from the course enrols vary, however both have hundreds of thousands of customers which may (or may not) see your course.

Her best advice about getting started is to “Get started!”

Fascinated by the leaders who make impact in the world, companies and politicians with the capacity to inspire, Simon Sinek has discovered some remarkable patterns in how they think, act and communicate. He wrote Start With Why: How Great Leaders Inspire Everyone to Take Action to explore his idea of the Golden Circle, what he calls “a naturally occurring pattern, grounded in the biology of human decision making, that explains why we are inspired by some people, leaders, messages and organizations over others.”

Adam Doyle stunned us with his depth of investigation into his business model and it was largely the product of working through the Business Model Generation process and using the Business Model Canvas. I think his PITCH was a great indication of the value of using this tool.

Mark Hallam has suggested Eric Ries of The Lean Startup as a great compliment to the Business Model Generation.

Lean Startup is the movement that has transformed how new products are built and launched. I believe initially started with online businesses but is applicable to all types of products and services.

E-Myth Revisited

Anne Blair kicked off our first Salon with reference to Michael Gerbers book – so she reckons he sold out in the end but the foundation is solid.   In The E-Myth, Michael Gerber dispels the myths surrounding starting your own business and shows how commonplace assumptions can get in the way of running a business. He walks you through the steps in the life of a business from entrepreneurial infancy, through adolescent growing pains, to the mature entrepreneurial perspective, the guiding light of all businesses that succeed. He then shows how to apply the lessons of franchising to any business whether or not it is a franchise. Finally, Gerber draws the vital, often overlooked distinction between working on your business and working in your business. After you have read The E-Myth Revisited, you will truly be able to grow your business in a predictable and productive way.
